Winter misery got worse

Just as the weather took a turn for the worse, I came down with a bad case of flu. That was a week ago and I'm still sick. Now that it's warming up, I should start getting better. This was the first year I neglected to get a flu shot since I had flu 20 yrs ago. Hard lesson learned!

A few migrants are starting to show up. And I ordered a new camera with more zoom than my current Sony RX10m3. It's a Nikon Coolpix P950. Should have done it years ago. So tired of getting non-IDable shots of distant birds. Still have to learn how to use it, but shouldn't be too difficult.

A new species of flower was discovered in Big Bend National Park last year, Wooly Devil (Ovicula biradiata).

Here's a link to an interesting article about it.

Expert Dr Michael Powell said it could possibly occur on our property. Unfortunately, neither my sister nor I are physically able to look. (My other sister and her daughter, who were so great at finding plants for us, have moved away)

I hope to share photos with my new camera soon. Lucifers could arrive within the week. And I'm still alive!

I hope you feel better soon. I can't get the flu shot because I'm allergic to the aluminum adjunct they use. Last time I had one it was over 4 months before I could life my arm level with my shoulder let alone above my head. My allergist said it'll get worse every time so stop taking any shot with the aluminum adjunct. I don't react to things made from aluminum. I guess there is something unique to what they use in the shots. lol. Enjoy the new camera. :-)

I'm going to recover, just takes a long time. I hadn't heard of someone being allergic to the flu shot. If it's any consolation, my husband had the shot and he got the flu right along side me.

They say they don't always choose the correct strain to vaccinate against. My case it's any shot with that form of aluminum added to cause the reaction. If they used a different adjunct I'd be fine with it. I come by the reaction naturally. My 85 yr old mom has an allergy to the same aluminum adjunct. There are a raft of vaccines neither of us can take. Her reaction is much worse. She has an anaphylactic reaction. Mine is more confined to the arm and shoulder. We have to go through the information pamphlet with any vaccine to see whether or not we can take it. And if not then ask whether there are versions using a different adjunct. Nice thing is we know what to look for and aren't to shy to discuss with the doctor to look into options. :-) Enjoy the hummingbirds when they arrive. Where I am we only get ruby throated. And it won't be until May or June. Right now we have 8 inches of compacted snow covered by a half inch of ice. We are hoping next week is warm enough to start melting the ice.
