Wild Burros of South Brewster Co

Everyone seems so delighted with the rapidly increasing wild burro population.

I wonder how big the herd will grow before people will be demanding something be done to control their numbers. 1,000? 10,000? 1,000,000? Interesting to contemplate.

Follow the Burros Carolyn. They know where to find water.

BTW, did you get much rain from that hurricane off western Mexico ? I looked up on the Satellite radar and it did eventually show some Thunderbumper images on the screen, but I wondered specifically how much you got if any. You know how hit and miss Thunderbumpers are ?

Alas, I didn't get any water in my tanks during that Baja hurricane although I got two nice .3" showers so I'm taking a few days off hauling water. Have a flat on the trailer anyway. Thanks for asking. I hear reports of over two inches in some places. My turn's gotta be coming. My tanks seldom, if ever, have filled in May. Usually they fill up in monsoon season.

You mentioned before that the geology doesn't hold water there. How do you get water for your own needs if not from a well, or is the well extremely deep ?

I used to have a decent well, but now all it produces is about 100 gallons a day. I wash dishes in a plastic tub and throw the water on a tree. I bathe and do laundry at our house in Alpine. I use a makeshift outhouse for a bathroom. Every drop of that 100 gallons ends up on plants. I have quite a few roof water catchments that harvest all the rainwater from the roofs, which gets used on plants too.

We tried drilling a 1000' for water in several locations. At that point, the driller said we were at bedrock, which went down another 1000' so we had to give up. My sister has a great well and if I knew where the fault ran across my property I would try to drill into it. It's at about 400' and I can't afford to drill anymore dry holes. I do fine on a single half-inch flash flood every year. Just haven't had it since Aug 2010 although it's happened numerous times all around me in every direction. I'm confident my tanks will fill up within a month.

Please tell me those burros weren't on your place!!

Of course not. I've never allowed grazing on my place since I bought it in 1977. That's why I have some rare plants and butterflies, etc.
